After having read On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, I couldn’t help but pick up Vuong’s poetry book entitled Time Is A Mother. In the same haunting manner as On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Vuong writes during a period of loss—grieving and mourning their mother.

Out of the darkness, bloomed a poetry collection that’s covered in bright blue bruises, freshly painted on the skin of the writer. Vuong reveals to readers so much about love, and loss, and trauma through these poems.

Scenes of the tips in a nail salon, a hug between a father and son, left an imprint on my heart and opened my eyes to a different experience. The writing provided a window into the life of Vuong.

From both titles, Vuong has proven to be an emotional writer, providing vivid detail and feeling, ultimately bringing to life the aches surrounding an event such as loss.

Though I am not an avid poetry reader, this collection has inspired me to read more and even write my own. Vuong’s way of wielding words is not one to ignore.
